Intuitive eating is a framework with 10 key principles to help you get back in touch with your body’s natural wisdom, rebuild the trust between your mind and body, heal your relationship with food and discover what it means to YOU to be well-nourished. It’s about listening to YOUR body to guide your food and movement choices. It’s about following internal signals like hunger, fullness and satisfaction and rejecting external cues like diets, food rules and societal trends.

Positive affirmations are self-affirming sayings or mantras that you repeat to yourself (as thoughts or out loud). Affirmations can re-wire your brain’s neural pathways leading to more uplifting beliefs and thought patterns. More uplifting beliefs and thought patterns lead you to take more uplifting actions. And more uplifting actions lead you to more uplifting outcomes in your life.
Some people think affirmations just mean standing in front of the mirror and repeating “I am beautiful” over and over again. That’s not what I’m talking about here (that doesn’t really work…am i right?). I’m talking about the kind of affirmations that you CHOOSE to adopt as your new belief system. The kind that become your identity and who you are so that your behaviors align with the version of you that you really want to be. What if you decided to take on a new belief system? One that makes you feel good. One that makes you feel free.
Who would you be if you let go of what society tells you and explore what YOU want?
I’m not telling you to give up everything you believe in right now but can you just experiment for 1 day with different beliefs? Then ask yourself, which set beliefs empower you? Which beliefs disempower you?
What are you going to CHOOSE to believe moving forward?
When your identity, thoughts, behaviors and beliefs align with the version of you that you want to be, that’s when you get the outcomes you want (maybe that’s feeling free around food, accepting and feeling confident in your body, being able to eat intuitively, etc).
Are you willing to try on some new beliefs?
Just take these affirmations for a spin for a week or even just a day and see how it feels. You can always go back to your old beliefs at anytime……but I have a feeling you might just want to keep this experiment going indefinitely.
According to a study done by the University of Pennsylvania, affirmations activate the reward centers in the brain which can help us feel less pain and maintain balance in the face of adversity. The study also found that affirmations increase activity in areas of the brain connected to self-related processing which can improve emotional responses to painful or negative situations. So, essentially affirmations work by rewiring the brain to gravitate towards more positive thoughts which ultimately leads to you being able to attract a more positive reality.
Our subconscious minds literally don’t know the difference between real and imagined. The brain perceives intuitive eating affirmations as truth and generates thoughts and feelings in alignment with that. Those thoughts and feelings then begin to generate the actions that someone who trusts and honors their body would take which then creates more positive outcomes like feeling confident and healthy.
When you think a thought, your brain perceives the information as truth and prepares you for the action that should immediately follow the thought. For example, if you think to yourself, “I know that I can trust my body to give me the cues and signals that will lead to balanced healthy, eating.”, your brain essentially hears “trust my body” and “balanced, healthy eating” and starts firing off all the connections to create outcomes in alignment with that.
It’s also important to keep your affirmations in alignment with what you want, not what you don’t want because your brain doesn’t know the difference. Instead of saying “I am not going to ignore my body’s cues today” (brain hears: ignore body’s cues), say “I easily and effortlessly honor my body’s cues” (brain hears: honor my body’s cues).
Your brain is always looking for direction, and if you can clearly give it that, it will activate everything you need to be on your way to becoming an intuitive eater. What direction will you choose to guide it in? The choice is YOURS 🙂
There is NO SHAME in asking for help. It is HARD to cultivate new thought patterns, beliefs and behaviors on our own. As a coach myself, I help my clients tap into the wisdom of their mind, body and soul to unlock their own, intuitive solutions so they can create their dream life. And self-love is just one of the many tools we use to do that.
