Welcome to the magnetically used podcast. My name is Madison cernik. And I'm a master mindset coach and food freedom expert. You're in the right place. If you want to manifest a life that means you jump out of bed excited I have every morning, reprogram your mind for success and happiness, feel your best and become magnetic to everything you desire. For me, killing my relationship with food was my gateway into mindset, spiritual and personal development. And now I am obsessed. And I realized the same thing became true for so many of the women. I've coached through my course the subtle art of food freedom, and doing the inner work around food became about so much more than food for all of us. So that's what this podcast is really about that expansion, expanding that inner work to all areas of our life so that we can become the most magnetic confident versions of ourselves and achieve our biggest dreams. If you're like me, and you're obsessed with personal development, then you are going to love this podcast. So let's freakin do this.
Hi, Kate, welcome to the show. How are you? Good. Thanks for having me. It's fun to talk with you in this kind of setting. I know I feel like we like just like caught up. And then like, I feel like I'm like so weird. When I'm introducing guests. I'm like, oh, how are you? And I'm like, I literally just talked to you like off the mic. But anyways, gotta love being awkward. So I wanted to first share a little bit about you and tell this story of how we max I think it's like, just really special. And like such a good reminder of like, like the universe just like sometimes brings us people like when we need them the most. And you're one of those people, um, for me, so thank you for that. But anyway, so Kate is amazing. She started out her entrepreneurial journey as a journalist and did all kinds of cool like traveling and writing amazing magazines. And she long story short, went through a big health crisis and got diagnosed with pcls saw, right, do you still have it is that like a thing that goes away? I mean, technically, you always will have it but I say that I'm like in remission from it basically like this, I have no symptoms of it, it's totally under control.
So she's in remission from she then that going through that and honestly bringing herself into remission, because I know her own, she went through her own healing journey, she started her own holistic wellness blog. And it quickly grew that to becoming a six figure business, which then led her to creating her own course on making money blogging, which is what she is focusing on. Now. So before I have you give us more background on your story, I just want to share about how we met. So our, um, my boyfriend and Kate's husband used to work together. And I had been mentioning to my boyfriend like, for years that I wanted to like start a blog or a business and I think he had heard about you from at work. And he was like, Oh, well I work with this guy. His wife is like a food and recipe blogger like I should try to connect you guys and I guess that's how we met or maybe at one of their like happier events. Do you remember like how we initially got connected? I mean, it was definitely through them. And I think yeah, we just both like were the plus one at a happy hour. And they were like okay, you to me and introduced us and then yeah, we kind of formed our own friendship outside of them then. Yeah, and then we went to coffee. And I had like wanting to start a business for years and Kate was like, Yeah, I have I make over six figures doing my blogging business and you can do it too. And I was like what Say what? Like Yes, sign me up and it just like kind of like gave me that inspiration like meeting someone and knowing someone and seeing someone who said I did this and you can do this too. And I want to help you like you were so generous and being like yeah, I can help you do that you and like you really were like such that meeting at the coffee shop with you is like such a turning point for me in my life because I started my blog and my business right after that like I there was no more like waiting and wishing and wondering like I finally got the ball. emotions. I think that's just so cool. And then that we've been able to stay friends and go to a wedding and Columbia and all of our fun experiences since then.
So Well, and why don't give yourself some credit to I feel like that might have been why I was brought into your life. But then you have were so instrumental in my own journey as well when it came to intuitive eating and learning about just how to love my postpartum body and things like that. So I feel like it was Kismet for both of us. Oh, thanks. Yeah, it's funny how I like came around. Full circle. So yeah, so, so magical. So happy to have you here. You're amazing. Okay. Anyway, so tell us more about the juicy details of your background and kind of what led you on to where you are today? Yeah, well, I mean, the summary you gave is pretty good. I feel like I I started in a corporate copywriting job. Because like most people, I graduated after I graduated from school, it was like, Oh, I have to get a real job, even though I feel called to have my own business and do my own thing. But you know, you just stuff those those dreams down, because that's what everybody does. And I was so miserable at my corporate career. And so I only lasted four months, and was just like, screw this, I like to live and I can't do it like this. And so I started a freelance writing business, I went to journalism school, I always wanted to be a freelance journalist. And I just got scared. So I decided, can't be worse than what I'm currently living. So I started that business. And pretty quickly grew that into a, you know, I was making more doing that than I was at my fancy corporate jobs. So I had this dream job for many years of traveling around the world and getting paid to eat at great restaurants and talk with chefs. And it was so fun. And it was like the best job I could have ever imagined for my 20s. But then I started getting older, and I got married, and we bought a house. And I just wanted to be a little more settled and not on the road all the time. And then I started having all these health issues, because this was so stressful. And I think at the time, I always attributed it to food. But now I know that it really was about the stress that I was under. So fast forward, I start I ended up going on this big health journey. And I started just approaching it like how I, how I knew how I was raised, which is like Western medicine and take a pill and do this, you know, and don't do anything else and all your problems will go away. And of course, that was not true. So I ended up seeking out some holistic resources and learning from just a much more functional integrative place. And it really changed my life. And then I felt like I have I have to share this. And so I started Rutan rebel, which is my wellness blog. And I did I did that still do that for a few years. And then once that became a successful business, I just started getting asked all the time. How did you do this? I don't understand how you're making money blogging, and I knew that I wanted to create an online course and so it just seemed like the next right step was like Okay, let's let's go down this direction. And then the more I did that, the more I just realized that I think my passion has always really lied and laid lied. And I'm a writer, but I still don't know the right way to say that. I'm in business and but really taking it from this holistic approach where it's very soulful, and you're in alignment with you know your true self and not just slaving away for somebody else's dream or you know, working in a job that doesn't light you up. So that's kind of my focus now.
That's amazing. So did you start the freelance writing job when you were still in your corporate job? Or were you just like, screw this? I'm out of here. I'll figure this out. Yeah, the ladder I just says left and I did it. I can't do it. Yeah, so well as a little bit of both. So I didn't have any freelance jobs while I was in corporate but I did freelance in college. So I actually got my first national magazine clip when I was a college student still, so I had experience and it should have been enough to make me realize like you could do this but I don't know, everybody else I knew, like had health insurance. And, you know, I just was like, probably the responsible thing to do here. And, you know, so yeah, I got the corporate job, I stopped freelancing, and then just quit everything cold turkey and, and build the business up from there. What would you say to someone who's in a scenario like you, wherever you were in the corporate job for even a few months, or someone who's been there longer who's like having that experience of like, what am I doing? Like, I can't go on like this, there's got to be something more, and they know there's something out there for them, but they just don't quite know what it is like, what would you? What advice would you give them? Yeah, such a good question. Because I think, so I had some savings that I could rely on, if I didn't make money, I didn't have a ton, but I had probably like three to six months or something. And I had really little expenses, and I was 22. So I was used to, you know, like living in dorms and stuff. So I didn't need a lot. So it's a little easier to do it at 22, than it probably would be at 32. Or, you know, the older you get, the harder it could become for sure. But I think like having a little bit of cushion was good. Because I didn't go into it with this really desperate energy of Oh my God, I have to just take like anything I can get because I have to pay my rent. But at the same time, like I didn't have limitless resources if it didn't work out. So there was still the pressure. And I think what I realized both times of quitting one job to go do something else that was starting from scratch. So leaving corporate to start a freelance writing business and then leaving my journalism career to start a blog was that, for me, it always took off when I went all in whenever I was trying to do multiple things at once. And, you know, especially when I think back to leaving journalism, so I when I started routing rebel, I really, I kept freelancing part time. And that was how I was, you know, paying my bills. And then I was not making any money with route and rebel when it first started. And my goal was like, once route and rebels making enough money, I'll stop freelancing. But after about a year of doing that, I just felt like I'm stretched too thin, I'm distracted, I'm pulled in too many different directions. Like, I'm just going to really make a go of this. And so I just said, I'm not going to take on any more freelance clients, I'm gonna put all of my energy into the blog. And as soon as I did that, it was like, my income tripled. And I just, I don't know, I think there's something and again, not everybody is going to have the same personality. But for me, being all in on something I think is is powerful.
Yeah, that's so interesting that you say that, and I think it's because it's like, almost like by staying in those like old roles that you know, you've kind of like outgrown aren't really serving you anymore. It's like, it's almost like it's energetically like, just like holding you down. And like dimming. Yeah, dimming your light. And so that I feel like that's, like, so powerful that you recognize, I'm glad you said that. So it sounds like I mean, you've definitely made like a lot of pivots in your career. Like, how did you know like when you were ready to like, make those pivots from like, freelance to or corporate to freelance freelance to ruin rebel route and rebel to now really focusing on business and blogging, like there's been such a powerful like growth and evolution. So like, what, what I guess, like what gave you the ability to give yourself permission to like change and evolve, because I think so many of us think we're supposed to, like, be the same thing and do the same thing for the longest time. And that's kind of how I felt with Sonny times, like, I felt like I leaving behind doing recipes and food photography. Right? When I had gotten to the point of like, getting paid $1,000 for like three photographs like right when I had gotten to that point, I was like, I knew in my heart that it was time to like, move on to focusing on coaching. And so I like left that behind. So anyways, I think what I'm asking is like, how did you handle going through those pivots and trust like, you're like, trust your heart and knowing that it was time to move on? It's such a good question. And it's something that I hadn't really thought about until you're posing it to me because in some ways, it kind of just, it wasn't as natural. I think part of it is that I have been self employed since I was 22. And so I think that initial time of giving myself permission, I mean, I just did it because I just really felt Like that was what I needed to do. And that if I stayed in my corporate job for like, a day longer, I would have just, like lost it. I mean, I was like, physically ill going to work, I just, I was like the pain of staying the same became way worse than the pain of change. And so I just had to make the change. And it was super scary. And everybody in my life was like, You're an idiot, it's 2010. And the economy is like barely even on a recovery path from the recession. And, you know, you have a steady job and a great company, like, What are you thinking, but I just knew that I couldn't, I couldn't do that. And that wasn't the life that I wanted. And, you know, my parents are both entrepreneurs as well. So I'm sure that helps that I had this example before me of like, you can pave your own way.
But yeah, I don't, I don't really know, it just was sort of this inner knowing of just like, I just have to do it. But then that decision was almost easier even though it was way scarier than like transitioning from freelance to route and rebel because it didn't have to be this like, all or nothing thing I could kind of do both for a little bit. And I did for a while, like I said, and even same with like route and rebel now to six figure blog Academy. And, you know, I am more in, like you said, this business space. And that feels like, I am still doing route and rebel, even though I'm feeling called to do this other thing. And so trying to just, you know, do I just walk away from this thing that I spent six years building? And that makes me a lot of money? Um, do I put push pause for a while and just like, well, let's just see what happens if I don't touch it for a year, or for a month, even like what, you know, I've thought about doing different experiments like that. I thought about selling it. I've talked to brokers and potential buyers to see, you know, what could we do and right now I just have on the universe's to do list to give me clarity and bring me like the perfect solution to this. And I'm open to whatever that might be. So if it's a buyer, then great, they will find me. And I'll sell and that will make sense. And if it's, you know, I think I just felt like, I still love root and rebel. And I love what it's about. And it still is very like dear to me. But I've I sort of feel like I've said what I wanted to say about the topic. And so now we're just bringing in guest experts and letting some other people have a voice and trying to amplify, you know, their message as well. And that's, I don't know, I'm just kind of thinking out loud here. I realized, but you know, I love it. It's so good, because I'm like so much on the same like journey right now. And I'm sure others who are listening are as well. So I think it's really helpful.
Yeah, I mean, I think hopefully what you'll anybody listening will get from this is like, nobody has it figured out. You might look at my Instagram and think that I do or something. But I don't I'm definitely still in this. Like, I don't know what the right thing is. And so I'm just kind of trying to take some of the pressure off. And I actually I had a call with one of my mentor friends. A couple months ago when I was like, pretty sure that I was going to sell rune rebel. And he told me, like, what have you thought about it more like a real estate property. Like if you if you owned, you know, an apartment building or something, or even just an extra house, and you rented it out? You could just hire a property manager who would make sure like, everything's kept up well, and like deals with the tenants and whatever. And you maybe check in a few times a month, but really, you're just like cashing the checks and getting that passive income. And what if you treated root and rebel like that? Like, what if it was, you hire somebody to kind of run the date and occassion Yeah, and then that's what I do. So that's, that's the experiment I'm trying right now. We'll see how it goes. I love that you're number one, like just like treating as an experiment and to like, remaining open to like, guidance from the universe because I feel like it's one of those things where it's like, we could drive ourselves absolutely insane trying to figure it all out and it's like, at a certain point, it's like let me just like surrender test an experiment. Not say this is like I'm for sure. Gonna keep it in maintenance mode. Like for the rest of my life. It's like no, like, we're just going to experiment and then I'm open to like something magical happening. Next month, and I think when we can stay open to those possibilities, like that's when those possibilities come, that's when the clarity comes not when we're trying to like, strangle ourselves and strangle the universe into finding clarity.
Yeah, and I mean, I'm in a very privileged spot where both businesses are earning enough that I don't have to be in a rush about it. And I don't have to have that desperate energy. But so I do recognize that, you know, not everybody's in that position. But I, I got to a point where I almost went down that path of like, Oh, I don't know what to do. And this is so stressful. And, you know, and then I just thought, it's just a game. I don't know what if we just treated life like it was just a game and like, let's just try it, try this and see what happens. And like, the beauty of online business, especially is nothing's permanent. And so you can change, you can evolve, you can shut it down, and then start it back up. Like I'm not, you know, nothing's permanent. So I just keep telling myself that of like, we'll try this and then see how it feels. Yeah, I'm, I'm so with you. And I'm like, so, you know, I decided to leave the recipes behind because we talked about this, I thought about selling my recipes. And to me, I still have Yeah. And then I was like, No, I'm sorry, I forgot to charge way higher prices. I'm kind of give you the friend discount. But anyways, I felt like that same thing with the recipes. And like, it's so funny that you like yeah, it's I think it's just so refreshing to hear you say like, okay, I don't have it all figured out. And like, neither do I like just the other day I was I like had this random thought of like, oh, should I put my recipes back on my website? And I'm like, Oh, my gosh, Madison, like you already went down this indecision rabbit hole for like, months, months, like last year, like, no, and then I was like, but what if, what if this is my intuition telling me something? And like, Is it is it not? I don't know. So totally failure on all of that. And I think like, we just have to just like, let it go and be like, the clarity is coming. The certainty is coming. The opportunities are coming like, it's fine.
Yeah, it will become clear. I just need to get out of the way. Yes, I feel like we always, that's like, the biggest thing that like, I feel like all of us do, we just get in our own way. It's like, I was like thinking about this analogy the other day, and hopefully, I think you'll resonate with this. But it's like, we are like, just randomly I think I maybe saw this in a dream or something. It was very weird. But it's like we're like on it if you imagine like on a soccer field, and there's like a goal and there's like endless soccer balls being kicked towards the goal, and they're all going to go in. But you're the best freakin goalie in the world. And clearly catching all the balls and blocking them all from going. And that's the kind of feels it's like, everything's already in motion, everything's already on its way to you. It's literally coming to you. And you're just standing there being like, block this block. Because we want so much like, certainty and control. But what I've really been like, realizing lately is that like, certainty, and I don't want certainty and control. If I did, then I would like want to stay in a corporate job forever. And I would like, you know, it just would be like, so boring. Like, that's the reason why I started a business is so that I could create, like, unexpected results. And like, if we want control and certainty, then we can expect controlled, and certain outcomes. But if we want like, if we want like limitless and like miracles, and we have to like make room for miracles and not try to like add it all up in our brains. Yeah, no, I love that. And it reminds me, I remember when I started my freelance career, I read this book called six figure freelancing. And I think it was that book, but she talked about how so many people would say, I don't know how you could like, be self employed and have your own business and not know exactly what you're gonna make every month. And she was like, I don't know how you could know exactly what you're gonna make every month. Like, how horrible and like to know exactly what's going to happen for forever. And just like there's no possibilities of exceeding that or, you know, welcoming more abundance. And that just always stuck with me of like, Yeah, I don't, I am a control freak. And I think that I want to know all of the things but when it really comes down to it, I would much prefer to like, next month, I can make a million dollars. Who knows?
Yeah, exactly. And it's like in your brain, you have to make X, Y and Z then it's like, you're kind of like blocking off those opportunities in your brain just like won't even register them because we get so zoned in on like, Uh huh. One thing so okay, I I'm loving this. This is going in a great direction. I know we talked about before, like, what are we going to talk Like, what is flow and see what comes up? This is totally what's meant to come up. So let's get into the juicy stuff of your business because you're killing it and all of your businesses have been killing it. And I think I'm my people listening would like love to hear your wisdom on like, yeah, I think Well, actually, I think where I would like to start, because I think that before even going into like, how to get started, it's more important to go into like, Okay, what is your thinking and mindset around getting started? And I know, for you, you've talked about like, going through, like burnout and like over hustling in the past. And now you're really focused on this, like total like coming to your business from this place of alignment. So can you talk a little bit about how we can like go into either starting or growing our business from a place of alignment rather than from this place of like, hustle and like yuck and control and like over, over thinking over doing overworking? Hey, girl, we'll get back to the show in just a sec. But I wanted to tell you about a special opportunity real quick. If you don't just say I have your higher self is nudging you right now. trust it. Pause this episode and do the damn thing. The universe will reward you and support you when you do trust me. Did you do it? Okay, kid back to this week's episode.
Yeah, well, I feel like I can't talk about it without crediting a few people that were very instrumental in my own journey. And one of them is my mentor Kate Northrup, who wrote the book do less. And that book completely changed my life. And now I'm in her mastermind and her membership and total groupie. But she has amazing resources for people looking to get started with doing less and and then Michael Hyatt is another another mentor who doesn't know me at all, but I read his book free to focus and I feel like that book also was just like crazy powerful in terms of helping me really dial in on what, what are the things I need to do that actually move the needle and how to get rid of the rest, whether it's automating or delegating or just saying like, guess what, this actually doesn't need to get done at all by anybody. It's not doing anything except making me feel busy and important. So I actually I have a podcast episode of my own called why I don't believe in hustle on my success with soul podcast. And I feel like that's a great another great place to for people to go check out if they want to kind of dig deeper into this topic. But I think it's really trying to like kind of sum up there's so many things of figuring out your why and coming up with a plan where every every task that you're doing every every thing on your to do list is tied to that so like is it going to get you this end result that you are looking for and if not, just let it go. I feel like that's been really important to me and like and really just being able to get quiet with myself which I'm such a Dewar and such a high achiever that it's hard for me to just be still but when I am and when I can just get quiet and Figure out what is it that I really want? And that I feel called to? And like, even what are my skills? And what are my strengths? And how can I help people that that clarity is really important. And then you just got to do and experiment and treated as an experiment. I mean, I get students, potential students to six FBI all the time that get on Discovery calls with me, and they all say the same thing, which is like, what if it doesn't work? I'm scared that it's going to, I'm going to fail. I go, Okay. Let's say it does fail. Let's say, you start a blog, and it doesn't work out. What's the worst case scenario there? And I feel like they all just end up pausing for like, 10 seconds to, um, I don't know, I mean, I guess I would have wasted some time, like, but you wouldn't have been a total waste, you will have learned, this isn't what I want to do. Or this doesn't feel right to me or whatever, you know, and like, well, what if it's embarrassing, like my friends and family could see and like, if your blog doesn't work, because or whatever it might be, if your business doesn't work? because nobody's, you know, nobody's reading it, then guess what? Nobody's gonna notice if it fails, either. Because they're not reading it. So who cares?
Yeah, exactly. No, I love that you brought those three things up, because I see that too. And not just with business, but with when I was teaching the subtle art of food freedom, every everyone who would come through that course of like, it was always about, well, what are people going to think of me if I'm like, eating what I want? And what are they going to think I'm lazy? Are they gonna think I'm bad? Or they're gonna think I'm unhealthy? Am I I'm just I'm known right now. And my friend circle is like, the healthy one. So like, what happens if they see me like, eating a burger? Like, it's like a whole, like, identity crisis? And yeah, will this work? And what if I fail? And like you said, it's like, I feel like there is no such thing as failure. You either get what you want, or you got a lesson. And either way, like, You're, you're better off, right? Yeah. And like, the worst case is like, okay, you're kind of right back where you started, like you said, maybe you spend some, like time or whatever. But like, what did you gain? What are you? What are you not seeing that was gained in that? Well, the lesson the learning the connections, like whatever it is, and like, I feel like a lot of times people discount their wins, to like, I had a client, like, who within a few weeks of deciding to start a coaching business. I had several people were reaching out about working with her, she started a podcast, like all this amazing stuff. And she was like, Yeah, like, I don't really feel like I've done that much. And I'm like, sure, like, I thought I thought more would have happened by now. And it's just so interesting how we like how our minds can like, basically, yeah, just have us like standing in our own way.
Yeah, for sure. And it's crazy to me, I mean, I am guilty of this from time to time to like, how much weight we put on what other people might think about us. And the truth of the matter is, most people aren't thinking about you at all, because they're thinking about themselves. And that, you know, I mean, I always am like, screw what other people think, what do you think, but even if we're gonna play the game of like, okay, yeah, we do care what other people think. And let's pretend they even think something about you. Like, if, if you if you're scared of being judged, I would rather be judged as somebody who tries a lot of things and like, maybe has some failures, but like, man, she just goes for it. And she just, you know, goes after it. And she's not afraid, and then be judged for somebody who's like, Oh, yeah, she never takes any chances. She just kind of sits back and just like coast through life, and would much rather be thought of the other way, even if everything I did failed. And, you know, I've been trying to work on my own relationship with the word failure lately. Well, for many years, and so I do get the fear. But I also know that action stops fear. And that is what I like, I think, again, when you put get yourself in that mindset of, it's just an experiment. It's just a game. And like you said, I'll either learn something or it'll work. And you know, and I have things like this that come up all the time, big and small. I was just talking to my financial coach the other day, and I'm interviewing to hire a full time position. And I said, I don't know just like, what if it doesn't work out? And she said, What if it does? I was like, oh, what if it does what if it works? out. Yes.
Oh, good. I've totally found myself so many times. I feel like I feel like a lot of times when we're like going to the next level becoming this like new version of us taking our business to get our minds and taking our life to the next level, like a lot of this stuff just like resurfaces in like a new way and like I love just shift that tiny shift of like, what if this? What could go wrong? What if this doesn't work to what could go right? What if this does work? What's the best thing that can happen? I know. Right? And I'm, I'm so guilty of like going straight to worst case scenario. But I think what we've what I've really realized is that worst case scenario really isn't that bad. And best case scenario can be so good. And I'm going to miss out on it if I just let fear stand in the way of ever doing anything. Yeah, totally. I love that and what you said about how like you would basically rather be like, doing judged for doing the things right. It's like, I don't know if you've ever heard Bernie brown talk about this, like being in the arena. Have you ever heard her now? Oh, my God, you have to watch her documentary on Netflix. It is so long and good. I think it's I forget what it's called. But it's something about courage. It's like an hour long. It's hilarious and so inspiring. But basically, like, she talks about how like, um, you know, we're, you can choose to be in the arena, you're in the arena, you're you're fighting, you're getting beat up. You're like going through these trials and tribulations and maybe you feel like you're failing, and then you get back up and you keep like fighting you're in the arena. Whereas like, most often, when we're when people are judging us, it's because they're not in the arena there. Oh, yeah. They're not putting themselves out there. And so why pay any attention to someone who's not in the arena? Wouldn't you rather be in the arena, getting your ass kicked and be watching from the sidelines?
Totally. And it goes back again, like not only are people probably not thinking about you, because they're thinking about themselves, but even if they are thinking about you, it's not about you, it's about them and what you're doing how it makes them feel about themselves. It rarely is ever that somebody is like, no, you're terrible, and it has nothing to do with me. Yes, exactly. Oh my gosh, I'm so glad we went into all of that. So okay, so now that I feel that I feel like what we just talked about, like really could support someone and like breaking like quickly breaking down like so many of those, like those, I feel like those are like three of the biggest barriers of like, well this work What if I fail? What what are gonna people gonna think? I feel like when you can like move past those, that's really when you can start moving into like, taking inspired action to go after your dream. So I would love if you could talk about that of just like, where for someone who is interested in starting a blog starting a business or who maybe has one, but isn't, you know, going all in with a they're kind of like halfway and halfway out like what what would you say to them about getting getting started and getting getting the ball rolling?
Well, my advice is a little self serving, but it is genuine. And I think that anytime I have wanted to do something, I have found somebody else who has done it before me and then learned from them. And, you know, when I wanted to launch my course, I signed up for Amy Porterfield digital course Academy. And when I wanted to start my blog, I found resources for that when I wanted to start my freelancing business, I read all the books about freelancing because the internet was like, I mean, obviously around, but not what it is today. And so, I mean, I think if you are wanting to start a blog, and you just don't know how to get started, or you've been blogging and you, you know, feel like okay, I'm doing this, but it's not really happening for me or I'm not really making any money yet. I would love to invite you into the six figure blog Academy because it's my step by step like proven system of this is what I did and what worked and what didn't save yourself the headache. And let me just like help you get it right from day one. So, like I said, it's a little bit of a shameless plug, but that's kind of my advice. Or if it's not me, then find somebody else who has done what you want to do, and learn from them.
Yeah, for sure. I feel like I've had such a similar experience where like investing and learning from someone who's done what I've done, like, is so powerful because not only are they making it so much easier, and they're giving you like all the like shortcuts to avoid all the mistakes they made, but it's like you are in this energy. Have someone who's done it, you're in this energy of believing it's possible because you're surrounded. You're like, surrounded by and filled with that inspiration motivation of like, well, she did it. So can I. And she's telling me how so that means I can do it too. So I think that's so powerful. So we'll definitely link that in the show notes. Can Do you want to talk a little bit more about it? Like what's like, what kind of things you like cover in the program for someone who's interested?
Yeah. So it's funny, I was just having a conversation with my team about this the other day, because I had this call with a somebody who's way above me. And I asked them at the end, why did you take this call like it? You know, what's in it for you honestly, like, why did you want to talk to me? And what he said, really stuck with me. And he said, You have been able to figure out how to monetize a really small audience in a really big way. And I just wanted to figure out, like, how are you doing this? And so I realized I'm like, Yes, that's what it is. That's my superpower. Because lots of people can tell you how to create a blog, you know, how to get started and the tech side of things, or whatever. But I think that what I've figured out how to do is, you know, route and rebel gets like 150,000 page views a month, and we make over $250,000 a year from the blog. And I don't think a lot of people are doing that most people that are making that kind of money from their blogs have millions of pageviews per month and 10s of thousands of followers. And you don't need that to make a really good living. And so that's really what I'm teaching in the course is like how to do this without millions of followers. And without it taking 10 years to get there. And without paid advertising, like everything I teach is all about organic growth. And it's not even really just about blogging, like I think people would be surprised that basically just teaching you how to monetize like an online platform. How to get people to find you with SEO, and Pinterest and Instagram. And I mean, a huge part of it is your email list. And we have an entire module dedicated to email. And so yeah, I think we started getting more people interested in the course who aren't necessarily traditional bloggers, but who have some other kind of business, whether it's a coaching business, or even brick and mortar that's maybe going online because of everything happening with COVID, or, you know, one on one services and stuff. And it's like your blog is just your hub, it's the gateway for people to find you and then become customers in some way. So, yeah. Okay, amazing. Well, thank you for sharing all that. And yeah, if starting and monetizing a blog is something you want to do. Go get Kate's course cuz she's an amazing teacher. And yeah, we'll we'll link that up in the show notes. Okay, so I want to like shift gears a little bit. And I feel like this is my self serving like piece. Well, selfish piece, you could say, but I think other people really benefit from it too. I want to like, hear more about the like, like, I don't like juicy like home, living lifestyle, holistic wellness stuff from you have and like all your years and years and years of like wisdom and content. Written, rebel. So can we talk about I would love to talk about like, is do we call it clean beauty or green beauty? Are those the same thing? Are they different things? I like know nothing. Yeah,
I mean, honestly, it's semantics. Mostly trendy, which trendy buzzword Do you want to insert here? I mean, I think maybe there actually could be differences. If I were to distinguish, I would say clean beauty is maybe a little bit more about the ingredients of what's in the products. Okay, whereas green beauty is maybe more a little focused on like the Eco friendliness of the product effect they might have like on the environment or in their packaging and that sort of thing. But usually if a company is about one they're about the other so I kind of think they end up being interchangeable. Oh, cool. Okay, what are like some tips you have for deciding? Like which, which like beauty products to buy, like things like makeup or something like that, like how do we decide what I think for me what's ideal and like, I think everyone listening and you may be different from me what's ideal is like, yeah, a balance of like, the level of the ingredients and the like. sustainability of it and like the environmental impact, I think for me those both are important. So like, how can we find the products that are in like alignment? And are of like higher higher standards and higher and even higher? Higher, like ethical, ethical and health standards? Yeah, great question. Well, I mean, I think there's tons of resources out there now route and rebel being one of them. But there's tons of other, you know, green, organic, natural, non toxic, sustainable, eco friendly, all these, you know, terms blogs out there that can help you with recommendations that help break down like, these are some of the key ingredients to look out for, this is why it matters. And there's, I usually end up using the Environmental Working Group, it's ew g org, and they have something called skin deep. And you just type in the product or an ingredient, and it will tell you if it's safe or not. And so I think just using that when you're like shopping and and looking at stuff, but it's a practice, and I think it starts with just like starting to read the labels on your products, and then paying attention to what they are, you know, do Google submit some of the ingredients, I mean, a lot of times, you're not gonna have any idea what they are, how to pronounce them. And, you know, it can be similar to food in that sense, where when you try to start kind of cleaning up your diet, for lack of a better term, that that's usually where it starts is like label reading. But just like with food, I also think like, you can take it to the extreme,
I was just gonna mention that because I was like, actually, when we first met, I was, um, as I started to really heal my relationship with food, I became more resistant to like hearing things about clean, eating clean, cleaving, like clean, living, clean. Beauty, like that was all very triggering for me, because I had lived so black and white for so long about rules with food that I'm like, Oh, shit, like, I can't also have all this stress around, like, the beauty products and stuff, but I feel like through doing I mean, so much like healing on my own relationship with food that like now I can talk about these things without it being like, triggering and like, I can cry out it from a place of like, I want to take care of my body. That's not because I I need to use clean things. So I can be good. And like, I can be perfect. It's like no, like, I like genuinely want to, like take care of myself. And it's like a totally different intention. So I would Yeah, I think I would like encourage everyone listening to just like, yeah, it's like, what's, what's your intention behind it? And like, just making sure you're always like, taking into account like, of, you know, balancing your, your mental health and physical and I know you like get that as well with Is there anything you'd want to like? Add? Yeah, I mean, that's, that's such a good point. And I feel like, I've been on my own journey of like you, you think, Oh, I could be perfect. I could not put a single toxic ingredient or, you know, unethical or unsafe or anything on my body or in my life. And it's like, that is not the world we live in. And it's no way to live. And you can make yourself crazy with it. I think it's a little insidious, then food can be because yeah, there's maybe less emotional attachment to certain things as well. But I always am just like, start with one thing at a time. Like, what's one product that you use currently that you're like, I don't care about this product, but it could probably be upgraded to something that's better for the environment and better for me. And so if you're like, yeah, I use the shampoo, it means nothing to me try to try a new shampoo, and you know, and then just start, like easing your way into it and know that you're never going to get to a place where it's now 100% of everything in my life is completely pure and and that is not good enough. Do it have nothing and do it. Yeah, there'd be I got I feel like I was getting to that place with food before where I like, had so many rules about food when I got to the place where I felt like there was like nothing I could eat. And like, obviously, we don't want to get to that place when we feel like there's like no shampoo in the world that's like safe to use. Right? Exactly. And, and there's certain things like, you know, I got to a place where I had transitioned almost everything to like a really clean product, but I really didn't like like I don't like a lot of the non toxic shampoos. I like a big sudsy Herbal Essences shower and so I went back to my like Pantene, and that's okay. I love Pantene, and then I also like really clean skincare and And you know, so I think it's just figuring out like, what's important to you. Again, like we keep coming back to like, everything's just an experiment. Try this, see how it feels. If it feels, you know, if you feel deprived, if you feel like, Oh, I just miss my old thing. This is terrible, then don't do it. But if you feel great, or you're like, this is so much better. Awesome.
Yes, I love that. Okay, I feel like that's such a great note to end on. Just like wrapping it all back up to Yeah, just treating everything as an experiment and following what feels good. So before you tell us where we can, like, find out more about you. What is there anything that you like, feel like is on your heart to share anything that we like, didn't cover that you wanted to get to? Such a big question. I don't know. I feel like I asked everyone that and they're like, I don't know. Like, I think I said everything. I know. Yeah, huh. I got nothing. All right, cool. Well, you already you've given us so much.
