In today’s diet and appearance obsessed world, it’s easy to believe that you will have it all once you have the “perfect” body. We’ve all been conditioned to believe that once we reach a certain weight, THEN we’ll be happy, healthy and worthy.
I know this is completely different from what everyone else is telling you. I know that going on a diet and focusing on weight loss feels like your only option. But I promise, there’s another way. A better way that doesn’t require you sacrificing your happiness and well-being.
However, I don’t blame you for wanting the perfect body. We’re constantly told that once we achieve our #bodygoals, then our lives will magically transform and we will instantly become happier and healthier (living the dream right?).
But that’s NOT true! Diet culture convinces us that there’s something wrong with our bodies that needs to be “fixed”. So of course, we then go searching for the magic weight loss pill. And surprise surprise, diet culture is like “here, let me help you, I have 6,000 magical diets you could pay me for….I can’t wait to profit off your insecurities”.
Do you see how messed up and backwards this is now?
But again, I totally get it. This is what we’ve been told our whole lives….weight loss = happiness and health. Nobody teaches us that we actually can feel our best RIGHT NOW exactly as we are.
I am guessing that you are shaking your head right now.
We like to think “Once I lose 10 more pounds, THEN I’ll be happy and confident”. But it doesn’t work like that. When you lose those 10 pounds, you are STILL the same person. You don’t all of a sudden become the kind of person who loves themselves. The negative thoughts and beliefs you have about yourself don’t just disappear. So instead of focusing on changing your body, why not focus on changing the way you feel about yourself and honoring your body?
Health and confidence are not a matter of how much you weigh, it’s a matter of if you are truly taking care of yourself or not. I totally get why you’re scared of gaining weight. It’s completely normal.
But this is a matter of where you are choosing to focus your attention.
Everyone is always telling us that losing weight is what will make us happy and confident and love ourselves.
But has focusing on weight loss been empowering you or disempowering you? How does it make you feel? Do you tend to act from a place of self-care or from a place of guilt, shame and disappointment when you focus on weight?
Does that actually give you the confidence you’re looking for?
Instead, how can you focus on adopting nourishing thoughts, beliefs and behaviors?
How can you focus on REAL self-love, REAL health and REAL self-care? (which you now know has nothing to do with your weight and everything to do with your behaviors, thoughts and beliefs and how you take care of yourself).
If you continue holding onto this belief that you need to be thin in order to be happy and healthy, then you may end up on the diet merry go round forever, stressed the F out, thinking about food and your body for the rest of your life.
I don’t know about you, but that’s not the life I want to live. I don’t want to look back on my life and realize I wasted it thinking about food and trying to change my body.
What can you do to feel happier? What can you do to feel good?
How can you focus on feeling abundant, light and free?
How can you focus on nourishing and respecting your body? How can you give your body the care it deserves?
How can you start choosing new, empowering beliefs about yourself and accepting yourself as you are?
When you work from this place, THAT’S when you can actually become happy, healthy, confident and feel worthy.
How can you start embodying that version of you who’s already made peace with food and her body? Who already feels healthy, energetic, happy and at ease in her body? What does she believe/think/say/do? How can you start being that version of you right now?
Why not try on this new way of thinking? Can you experiment with some new beliefs for a day or even a week and see how it feels? You can ALWAYS go back to your old way of thinking if you decide to. To me, there’s no such thing as true or false, there’s only empowering or disempowering. Which will you choose?
